The Melodians played at the Patron’s Lunch on the Mall to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. It was a very busy day as all participants had to arrive at 7.45 am to get ready for the celebrations. The Melodians were located at the Admiralty Arch end of the Mall near the stage where the speeches were given.
A couple of photos from the day:

We were so pleased to receive a wonderful letter from HM Ambassador in Moscow – Laurie Bristow, thanking us for travelling to Moscow to help them celebrate HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday. Letters like this make all the hard work worthwhile.
HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations are in full flow this weekend. Loads of street parties taking place and especially one on the Mall tomorrow – The Patron’s Lunch! http://www.thepatronslunch.com/event_info
BBC1 will be showing the event live between 1.15 and 4.15 pm. The Melodians are due to play between 1.45 and 2.20 pm at Admiralty Arch so hopefully we will be on BBC1 tomorrow afternoon.
It’s looking like a very busy time for the Melodians in June. See all their events on the RHS of each page. On Tuesday 7th June they will be flying to Moscow to play at the Queen’s 90th Birthday Party at the British Ambassador’s Residence on 8th June. They return on the Thursday 9th June in time to prepare for the Patron’s Lunch on The Mall.
The Patron’s Lunch (www.thepatronslunch.com) will be on Sunday 12th June and is an exciting opportunity for people to sit and eat lunch on the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace and celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. There will be a Carnival style procession down the Mall. The Melodians will be playing on a stage at the Admiralty Arch end of the Mall (our instruments are just too heavy to carry and play). The Queen will be there also to make a short speech for all those who attend. It sounds like a fantastic occasion to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
The following weekend the Melodians will be at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst to play for Heritage Day. They will be playing 3 times during the day. This should be another exciting and busy day.
Unfortunately, the date of the Ely’s Party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday has been changed to 8th June which clashes with the Melodians visit to Moscow to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday at the British Ambassador’s residence. As a result we have had to delete the Ely’s event from our gig list and we are now available for bookings on the 25th May.
The Melodians Steel Orchestra played at Westminster Abbey on a chilly day as guests arrived for the Commonwealth Day Service. The players, helpers and parents of the younger children were able to attend the service in the Abbey which was televised live on BBC1. HM the Queen and many of the Royal family were at the service and Terry Noel (leader of the Melodians) was invited to meet the Queen and other members of the Royal family as they left the Abbey.
The recording of the service can be seen on the BBC iPlayer on this link. You can catch the Melodians playing right at the beginning of the recording behind the presenter Mishal Husain:
Among the 7 pieces that the Melodians played was one of their new pieces of music ‘Colour Blind’ that was composed for them by Robert Thompson of Arima, Trinidad. You can hear a recording from the day on this link:
On Monday 14th March the Melodians will be playing outside Westminster Abbey as guests arrive for a special Commonwealth Day Service to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday year. The BBC will broadcast the service live from 2.45 pm on BBC 1. This should start with an introduction by Mishal Husain and a pre-recording in the background of the Melodians playing as guests arrive.
