You will all know about the Coronavirus and the new rules and laws that have been put in place to protect everyone and ensure that infections are kept to a minimum. Unfortunately, this has had implications for the Melodians also.
The school where we rehearse is only open now for children of essential workers. We cannot now enter the school and carry out our rehearsals.
Also, our performance at the British Embassy in Oslo, Norway, due to take place in June this year, has been postponed until next year.
We understand the need for all of this and look forward to the time when the Coronavirus is under control and everyone is protected. In the meantime we hope all our supporters are well and will be able to care for their family and themselves in these difficult circumstances. Our love goes out to you all.
The Melodians Steel Orchestra UK played at the Commonwealth Day Service in Westminster Abbey on 9th March 2020. They played a tune called Commonwealth Melody written for the Melodians by Robert Thompson of Arima, Trinidad and Tobago. There were many people at the ceremony from Trinidad and Tobago and they all enjoyed the tune from their home country. Her Majesty the Queen and many other members of the Royal family were there to be part of the service they all enjoyed the Melodians performance.
The Melodians played at Westminster Abbey on Friday 21st February for Commonwealth Family Day. It was a wonderful event and the families really enjoyed it. Here is a photo and recording of the Melodians playing Rasputin.
This Friday 21st February the Melodians will be taking part in Commonwealth Family Day at Westminster Abbey.
Then on Monday 9th March we will be playing at the Commonwealth Day Service. We are delighted to be playing inside the abbey on this occasion. The whole event is being played live by the BBC so hope you can catch our performance. We will be playing live as the Queen arrives – only one piece of music but we are honoured to be welcoming in Her Majesty.
We have been very busy organising our events for 2020. The last 6 months of 2019 were unusually quiet (worries about Brexit possibly?) but 2020 looks to be a very busy year with a number of engagements already agreed and others just waiting for the final confirmation.
We are particularly pleased to be playing again at the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey in March. We are especially fortunate to have been invited to play again inside the Abbey itself as part of the event. We understand that our performance will be available for everyone to listen to live on the BBC.
We are also waiting for confirmation of an overseas event in June. Watch this space for more information when the event is confirmed.
